CHICKEN GYROS

A gyro or gyros is a Greek dish made from meat cooked on a vertical rotisserie. Like shawarma and tacos al pastor, it is derived from the lamb-based doner kebab.

I had wanted to try this for a long time now, and so the time has come when I actually make this yummiest chicken gyro. The name is kind of fancy but you'll need nothing really-fancy to make this. From the ingredients to the equipment, everything is easily accessible and available in every home I guess.

To make these gyros, you'll have to thinly slice your chicken breasts and let them sit in the marinade for a couple of hours or even overnight if you plan ahead. This way the flavors would develop even better.

For the marinade, I preferred to freshly ground the cumin and coriander seeds using the pestle and mortar. It adds a touch of fresh and aromatic feel to the whole dish and lifts up the flavor to a whole next level. The other ingredients that go in the marinade are - greek yogurt, paprika, cayenne pepper, black pepper powder, cinnamon powder, lemon juice, olive oil, garlic, and salt. All this to get you that deliciously flavorful tender juicy chicken gyros.

I feel sorry for trying this dish so late. But I hope you can just hit your kitchen and fetch your chicken breast and go ahead with making these. You are going to love them and be proud of getting the restaurant-style food straight into your home kitchen.

Let's get started with the recipe -

  • ¼ cup lemon juice(60 mL)

  • ¾ cup olive oil(180 mL)

  • 1 tablespoon coarse salt

  • 1 tablespoon garlic, minced

  • 1 tablespoon coriander powder

  • 1 tablespoon paprika

  • 1 tablespoon ground cumin

  • ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper

  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

  • 1 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  8. Carve off slices of chicken to fill a pita. Top with onion slices, tomato slices, and tzatziki sauce.
