Vegetable Spring Roll Recipe [Chinese Version]

Vegetable Spring Roll recipe is really a no-brainer. It is easy and quick, and can be whipped up in no time. Most of the spring roll recipes would require a long cooking process, but you are definitely not doing that here. It is also one of those recipes that do not involve a huge list of ingredients.

This recipe was passed on to me from a friend. Though we haven’t met in a long time now, but every time I make these, they remind me of her. That’s why I say everything in Life is pretty much connected 💕.


What Kind of Sheet/Wrapper Should I use for this roll?

The best kind of spring roll sheet to use for this recipe is the one which is either made with whole wheat flour or all-purpose flour. I am using kulit popiah spring roll pastry. I find these the best so far. These are available in all stores (most often). They come in different sizes and are pretty easy to work with. See image below - 👇🏻

Breaded Spring Roll Twist -

These spring rolls have a little twist Towards the end. I am not sure if you have ever tried to do this to your spring roll, but I will highly reckon you do it if you are a spring roll fan! Just roll them in bread crumbs and you’ll be blown away with the crispy crunchy bite that you chew on to. If you are new to this idea, just give it a shot & hopefully you’ll never wanna have them not-coated.

The sticking paste used to seal the spring rolls will be used as a dip. Add a little extra water to give it a slurry consistency and dip the spring rolls in the slurry, then coat with the bread crumbs. & finally fry them. & then - Bon Appetite! 🍽

You can also coat them with sesame seeds or black seeds. They give yet another kick to the simple ingredients used in the spring rolls.

Vegetable Spring Rolls [Chinese Version]


 

Ingredients

  • 1/2 big cabbage finely chopped

  • 2 carrots cut in julienne

  • 2 green bell pepper cut in julienne

  • 2 tbsp chopped garlic

  • 1 tbsp ginger julienne

  • 2 bird eye chilis chopped

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 1 tsp black pepper powder

  • 1 tbsp soya sauce

  • 1 tbsp Chili sauce

  • Just a pinch of corn flour

  • 3 tbsp sesame oil


Instructions to Make Spring Roll (See Video Below)

  1. Chop the cabbage finely lengthwise. Wash it, set it aside to drain.

  2. In the meantime, grate the carrots or cut in thin juliennes & do the same for the bell peppers.

  3. Once the cutting & chopping is done, head on to the cooking.

  4. Heat oil In a pan and add the garlic and stir fry for a minute.

  5. Add the ginger juliennes when the garlic turns golden in color. Cook for another minute.

  6. Time to add the carrots, stir fry them.

  7. Add the capsicum and fry for a minute.

  8. Finally add the cabbage, salt, pepper, soya sauce, chili sauce & mix it all well. Keep flame on medium high and give a quick stir.

  9. Turn off the heat & just sprinkle a pinch or two of corn flour to the mixture and give it a toss.

  10. Our so simple, quick, easy & delicious spring roll filling is ready.

  11. Once the filling cools down, start filling it in the sheets.



Notes to make the Spring Roll

  • Wet Vegetable Stuffing: Most of the vegetables will leave out the moisture and hence gets the liquid in the mixture. To reduce this mess, I add the cornflour in the end as it helps to absorb the excess liquid and keep your spring rolls fresh for a longer period of time. So try not to skip this step. It’s a saver.

  • Dry Spring Roll Sheets : If sometimes the spring roll sheets dry out while you are making them. Do not panic, just smear them with a wet hand(use water) and then try to use them. They’ll turn soft like ever before & you can use them to fill the stuffing. Or, You can also wrap the sheets in a wet kitchen towel as you start your stuffing story and keep them tucked in till you are finished with them. They will never go dry & you’ll never be disappointed 😀.
